Art & Well-being for Incarcerated Women

The pilot Art & Well-being Program was launched in the summer of 2022 in collaboration with Teaching Artist Dawn Butler and the Cook County Department of Corrections, Women's Division.

This program aims to convert the women's jail tier into an art studio, providing a space for participants to unleash their creativity through mixed media art journals while also learning and practicing mindfulness meditation techniques.

With a weekly attendance ranging from 38 to 42 women, the program guides participants through various sessions focusing on color theory, doodling, self-portraits, and other creative projects, allowing each individual to express their unique artistic style. The artwork created by these women can be viewed at Monarch Thrift Shop, located at 2875 N. Milwaukee Avenue.
